Exhibition by Dilip Sharma and Bipin Kumar at Ahmedabad Ni Gufa Gallery.
📍 Ahmedabad, August 12
Ahmedabad’s iconic Ni Gufa Gallery is hosting a unique artistic experiment: two solo exhibitions by acclaimed abstract artists Dilip Sharma and Bipin Kumar, presented side by side in the same space. Curated by Arpan Kapadia, the shows invite audiences to engage with two distinct yet complementary visions of abstraction.
The exhibitions were inaugurated by noted art entrepreneur Anil Relia, senior artist Vrindavan Solanki and eminent artist and Centre Director- SAPTI (Dharangadhra) Manhar Kapadia.
While both artists share a dedication to abstraction, their creative worlds diverge in direction and depth. Bipin Kumar channels various forms of contemporary life into purely abstract structures, his works unfolding as vibrant manifestations of fantasy. For over three decades, Kumar has pushed colour, line and form beyond the visible, crafting emotional and philosophical landscapes detached from reality.
“The world is not what it appears to be. I resort to fantasy to understand what it is like,” says Kumar. An alumnus of Patna Art College and Delhi College of Art, his artistic journey began with symbolic watercolours before evolving into complete abstraction. For him, wild fantasies—unconnected to the real world—are a pathway to deeper understanding. His canvases dissolve recognisable shapes into spaces where imagination reigns, inviting viewers into mysterious, emotive realms.
Dilip Sharma, originally from Bihar and long based in Delhi, draws on both spiritual traditions and personal memories to shape his work. His paintings often feature human figures—stable yet enigmatic—emerging from half-seen darkness. In his art, form and abstraction merge into a unified visual language. Alongside his creative practice, Sharma is deeply committed to art education and institutional engagement, working to foster a supportive environment for artistic growth.
Restricting his palette to earthy browns and blacks, with occasional vivid flashes of red, Sharma creates atmospheres rich with mystery. This use of red, he says, reflects his spiritual and cultural consciousness. His technique—melding lines with shapes to free rather than confine them—imbues each work with both intensity and depth, balancing the personal with the universal.
Together, Two Streams of Unbound Fantasy and Formless Form offers Ahmedabad’s art lovers a rare opportunity to experience two distinct approaches to abstraction—one rooted in the boundless terrain of fantasy, the other in the quiet resonance of spiritual memory.
