Ramchandra Pokale’s solo show in Jehangir was different traditional scenic depictions.
Prominent artist Ramchandra Pokale’s solo exhibition, titled, Prakriti: The Nature, was held in Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai from April 2, 2024, to April 8, 2024. The theme presented a unique perspective on nature, moving away from traditional scenic depictions. Instead of gentle and familiar scenes, the artist focused on the raw energies of natural elements, creating a powerful and dynamic portrayal. This shift follows a period during which the artist concentrated on pencil techniques in predominantly black and white compositions. The exhibition showcased the artist’s exploration of colour, developed over a two-year period of conceptual evolution, with nature taking centre stage as the ultimate inspiration.
The artworks in this exhibition featured symbolic representations such as Jupiter, elephants, and whales, symbolizing immense forces in nature. The Karakul cat, known for its flexibility, becomes a symbol of bodily elasticity. These elements are woven together to convey the artist’s new concepts, highlighting the interconnectedness and vastness of the natural world.
However, the exhibition was not solely about strength or tranquillity, it delved into the overlooked aspects of our universe with a touch of whimsy. For instance, a water nymph on Mars and intense eye forms represented children’s imaginations adding layers of meaning. There were also subtle reminders of nature’s dangers, like a snake climbing a sandalwood tree near a nest of parakeets, illustrating the delicate balance and interactions within nature.
Overall, the exhibition explored the deep connection between artistry and the natural world, showcasing how both can inspire profound artistic expression in the hands of a skilled artist.
