British contemporary artist Sacha Jafri is a force of nature in the art world—blending creativity with compassion, and scale with soul. Renowned for breaking records and boundaries, Jafri’s artistic journey is marked by immense canvases, iconic tributes, and even interstellar milestones, all woven together by a unifying message of hope and humanity.
The Journey of Humanity: A Historic Artistic Feat
During the global lockdown in 2020, when much of the world came to a standstill, Jafri transformed isolation into inspiration. He set out to create The Journey of Humanity, an extraordinary painting that would become the largest canvas artwork ever produced. Covering more than 17,000 square feet—roughly the size of two football fields—the painting took seven months to complete. Working up to 20 hours a day inside a Dubai hotel ballroom, Jafri used over 1,000 brushes and more than 6,000 liters of paint.
What made the work even more powerful was its collaborative heart. The artist invited children from over 140 countries to submit their drawings, which he then incorporated into the piece. The result was not just a painting—it was a global outpouring of emotion, connection, and resilience during one of the most trying periods in recent history.
In 2021, The Journey of Humanity was auctioned for a staggering $62 million, making it one of the most expensive artworks sold by a living artist. Proceeds were pledged to global charities supporting children’s education, healthcare, and digital access.
Honouring Cricket Icons Through Art
A former cricketer himself, Jafri holds a deep respect for the game. His admiration for Indian cricket legends such as Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli inspired him to create unique paintings in their honour. These works were not just about sport—they were a fusion of athletic excellence and artistic interpretation, created to raise awareness and funds for children’s charities in India.
Each portrait channelled the energy and emotion of its subject, while staying true to Jafri’s expressive, abstract style. It was a testament to how art can celebrate sporting greatness while serving a larger humanitarian purpose.
Sky-High Art on the Burj Al Arab
Never one to shy away from pushing creative boundaries, Jafri painted We Rise Together atop one of the world’s most iconic structures—the helipad of Dubai’s Burj Al Arab. Measuring 10 by 12 meters, the artwork was completed in an intense 48-hour session.
Symbolizing global unity and the shared journey of mankind, the piece echoed Jafri’s recurring themes of compassion and collaboration. The setting—high above the city skyline—further reinforced the message of elevation, both literal and spiritual.
Taking Art to the Moon
Perhaps Jafri’s most audacious venture yet was his attempt to send art beyond Earth. His work We Rise Together with the Light of the Moon became the first official artwork intended to land on the Moon. Developed in collaboration with NASA, Space bit, and Astrobotic, the project aimed to place the piece in the Moon’s Lacus Mortis crater.
While the mission’s lunar landing did not succeed, the artwork did reach orbit—marking a historic fusion of space exploration and artistic expression. It was a symbolic gesture, intended to remind us of our shared humanity, even as we venture into the cosmos.

Through his “Humanity Inspired” initiative, Jafri works to bring art into the lives of children and marginalized communities around the globe. As he approaches the 25th anniversary of his career, Jafri is preparing for a world tour retrospective. The exhibition will feature key works spanning his journey as both an artist and humanitarian.
