Vijay Pichumani’s solo show supported by Art Houz in Chennai
Nature, in its raw and unbridled form, serves as both muse and mentor for the artist. For Vijay Pichumani, a post graduate from Chennai’s Government College of Arts and Crafts, the natural landscape serves as a metaphor through which his thoughts and ideas are conveyed.
The recent solo show by artist Vijay Pichumani titled ‘By Nature’s Force: Veli Vetridamakha Nagarkirathu‘, was held at Lalit Kala Akademi Regional Centre, Chennai. Supported by Art Houz gallery, the show was inaugurated on June 29, 2024 and continued till July 4, 2024.
Vijay’s early experiences, filled with childhood wonder and curiosity, continue to shape his artistic vision. The large format of his work offers an immersive experience, drawing viewers into a world where the sounds of birds and animals seem almost audible. From a young age, Vijay found solace and inspiration in nature. His early interactions with the environment, shaped by his upbringing in a small village in Kanyakumari, reflects in his works. His deep connection with Mother Nature has left an indelible mark on his psyche.
The artist weaves a tapestry of meanings and emotions. The diverse collection of prints, woodcuts, mixed media works and sculptures unveils how the artist translates his personal journey—an echo of his emotional landscape—into compelling visual narratives.
The artist deftly captures the concept of movement and change through bold lines and textured interplays to evoke transitions and transformations. Each piece draws inspiration from his personal anecdotes and intimate encounters with nature, which offer insights into the social and cultural fabric of his surroundings.
From intricate leaf patterns to dynamic flight of birds and from majestic mountains to the silent strength of trees, Vijay employs diverse techniques that fill his work with a tangible and multidimensional quality. The use of natural materials and earthy colour palettes further emphasise the organic essence of his creations.
The exhibition helped provoke contemplation on memory, movement and nature’s enduring influence. Metaphors intricately woven into the artworks invite viewers to delve into deeper meanings and connections, fostering a dialogue about identity, tradition and the human experience within their community.
