The Gandhi Darshan Art Gallery, a new cultural haven in Delhi, was officially inaugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on January 6, 2025. The gallery, situated within the sprawling 36-acre Gandhi Darshan premises at Rajghat, aims to celebrate art and creativity while honouring Mahatma Gandhi’s enduring legacy. Nearly 100 artists from across India participated in the inaugural celebrations. Renowned sculptor Ram Sutar graced the event as a special guest.
Addressing the gathering, Birla lauded Gandhi Darshan’s efforts to create a space for artistic reflection and expression. He emphasized the global impact of Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of nonviolence, which have inspired numerous worldwide movements.
Birla also underscored the importance of art in shaping society’s cultural and intellectual fabric. He called upon the youth to engage actively in building a ‘Viksit Bharat’ or a Developed India, highlighting the transformative power of thought and creativity in the nation’s progress.
Vijay Goel, former union minister and vice chairman of Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti, envisioned the Gandhi Darshan Art Gallery as a major cultural landmark in Delhi. Recognizing the scarcity of accessible spaces for artists in the city, Goel expressed confidence that the gallery would become a major hub for both established and budding artists.
“The gallery’s purpose is to offer an inspiring environment for artists to display their work,” Goel stated. He announced that the first seven exhibitions would be free, after which the gallery would be available to artists and organizations for a nominal fee. Plans include hosting periodic exhibitions, workshops, art camps and collaborations to nurture creativity and inclusivity.
