NDMC to install fifteen sculptures along iconic locations in the Capital.
Through the sculpture trail and art park, NDMC AIMS to establish Lutyens’ Delhi as a global cultural destination
In a move set to redefine public art engagement in the capital, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will soon turn a section of Lutyens’ Delhi into an open-air art experience. Spanning from Mandi House to Kasturba Gandhi Marg, the plan envisions a vibrant ‘sculpture art district’ where city streets turn into an immersive gallery.
As part of the initiative, fifteen large-scale sculptures—ranging from 10 to 15 feet in height—will be installed along iconic locations such as Copernicus Marg, the National School of Drama, FICCI Auditorium, and Triveni Kala Sangam. Crafted in various materials like stone, stainless steel, and bronze, these artworks will be complemented with lighting and informational plaques to encourage the public’s daily interaction with contemporary Indian sculpture.
The first phase of installations is expected to come up within three months, with full completion by year’s end.
This project is part of NDMC’s sincere effort to integrate art into public life. It also includes plans for an international sculpture symposium and the development of a sculpture garden inside Nehru Park.
At a press conference on Tuesday, NDMC vice-chairman Kuljeet Chahal emphasized the importance of democratizing art. “We want to take art beyond galleries and museums and bring it directly to the public,” he stated. “Through the sculpture trail, art park, and symposium, we aim to establish Lutyens’ Delhi as a global cultural destination.”
By engraining art in everyday urban settings, the NDMC hopes to foster greater appreciation for visual arts and position Delhi among the world’s most artistically engaging cities.
