Raghava KK’s Figuring the Edge redefines the boundaries of painting, where surface, body and perception collide in a visceral dance.
In Figuring the Edge, artist Raghava KK turns the canvas into a space of negotiation—a meeting point where the physical and the philosophical converge. The “edge” is not merely a boundary but a metaphor for contact, a site where different realities touch and redefine one another. His approach collapses distinctions between art and viewer, transforming observation into a tactile act of participation.
Using thick impasto, layered pigment, and dynamic mark making, Raghava constructs textured surfaces that are as much sculpted as they are painted. The works vibrate with energy, urging the viewer to move closer, to shift perspective, and to witness how light and proximity alter perception. In doing so, the artist demands a full-bodied response—an encounter rather than mere viewing.
Each work serves as an experiment in form and philosophy. Some question the boundaries of painting itself, while others respond to ideas about the body and consciousness. Raghava’s canvases refuse stillness or easy reproduction—they are intentionally unphotographable, existing only in the immediacy of presence. Mounted at unconventional heights or extending across the floor, these works breach traditional display conventions, expanding painting into lived space.
In this exhibition, Raghava KK continues his exploration of embodied abstraction, situating the viewer at the very threshold of seeing and feeling. The result is a series of works that exist at the intersection of thought, matter, and movement, reminding us that art’s true vitality often resides at the edge—where perception itself begins to blur. Curated and produced by Ashvin E. Rajagopalan with the Ashvita’s team: Priyanjoli Basu, Sruthi Srinivasan, Rithik Pramod, Ajay R, Anisha Maria, Nivedita Dharan, Samiya Ayesha, and George & Ganesh. The exhibition is at Ashvita’s, Chennai from November 7th onwards.
